IMS PCBs: high performance and efficiency for demanding applications

IMS PCBs (Insulated Metal Substrate PCBs), also known as metal core PCBs, provide a robust, thermally efficient solution for high-performance applications.

IMS PCBs (Insulated Metal Substrate PCBs), also known as metal core printed ciruit boards, provide a robust, thermally efficient solution for high-performance applications. Unlike conventional FR4 PCBs, they utilize a metal base – typically aluminum or copper – to effectively dissipate heat and avoid hotspots. This makes them ideal for LED lighting, power electronics, as well as automotive and industrial applications where thermal management is crucial.

Insulated Metal Substrate PCBs consist of multiple layers: the metal core ensures optimal heat dissipation and mechanical stability. The dielectric layer electrically isolates the core from the copper traces while enabling efficient heat conduction. A copper foil forms the electrical circuitry, precisely etched for optimal performance. An additional protective layer and solder mask shield the printed circuit board from oxidation and add robustness.

Advantages: thermal performance and durability

The metal core gives IMS boards significant advantages. Their excellent thermal conductivity (0,6- 8 W/mK) reduces hotspots and protects components, ideal for demanding high-power electronics. With a low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE), Insulated Metal Substrate boards resist warping and solder joint fractures, making them durable and resilient. Additionally, the conductive metal core enables uniform current distribution, minimizing voltage drops and preventing overheating.

Applications of IMS PCBs

IMS printed circuit boards are the preferred choice in numerous high-performance applications. In LED lighting, effective heat dissipation supports a longer lifespan and stable light output. Power electronics, such as power components and RF amplifiers, also benefit from the thermal properties that IMS PCBs offer. In automotive technology, especially for control units and display systems, IMS printed circuit boards are valued for their ability to withstand tough environments. These robust printed ciruit boards are also widely used in industrial and telecommunications sectors due to their reliable performance under challenging conditions and superior thermal efficiency.
